Beschrijving

Gerald, a jazz musician living in Johannesburg, is summoned by Jack, his dying farmer uncle, to a clinic in a small dorp. Jack, an English speaking person, is a troubled bachelor who has lived alone for most of his life. Over many years he has struggled to win acceptance from the predominantly conservative Afrikaners in the area, but in his stricken condition, they show him affection and support.

Despite his estrangement from Jack, but mindful of his probable inheritance of the farm, Gerald agrees to make the trip, and witnesses the old man’s last days. While at his bedside, he receives an unexpected phone call from the farm – two neighbours, both Afrikaners, wish to buy goats as a matter of urgency. Gerald is at first reluctant but the men, though crude hustlers, manage to persuade him to join them on the farm and carry out the sale.

Then, while fetching him from hospital, they get him drunk and his subsequent difficulties in handling the sale of the goats throw up a number of comic situations. These scenes, in conjunction with earlier ones at Jack’s bedside, also reveal Gerald’s lust for life and women, and contrast this with his dying uncle’s sexual rawness and state of depression.
