France achieved his first commercial success with the novel ‘Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard’ (1881) and published his most celebrated work, ‘La Rôtisserie de la Reine Pédauque’ ('At the Sign of the Reine Pédauque') in 1893. His many other works include, 'Le Puits de Sainte Claire’ (1895) ('The Well of Saint Claire') ‘Le Lys rouge’ (1894) ('The Red Lily'), ‘La Révolte des Anges’ (1914) ('The Revolt of the Angels') and a biography of Joan of Arc (1908).
