Like the ‘The Great Gatsby’ and much of Fitzgerald’s other writing, this book is heavily inspired by his own life, and certainly by his tumultuous relationship with socialite and novelist Zelda Fitzgerald.

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was een Amerikaans schrijver. Hij werd geboren in Saint Paul in de staat Minnesota, en wordt gezien als een van de grootste Amerikaanse schrijvers uit de 20e eeuw. Hij was de woordvoerder voor de Verloren Generatie, Amerikanen die geboren waren in de laatste 10 jaar van de 19e eeuw, en die volwassen werden tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Hij schreef vijf boeken en een groot aantal korte verhalen met thema's als jeugd, depressie en leeftijd.
Hij stond bekend als Scott Fitzgerald of F. Scott Fitzgerald, ging in 1913 naar de Princeton universiteit en raakte bevriend met toekomstige critici en schrijvers als Edmund Wilson en John Peale Bishop. Doordat zijn universitaire carrière maar moeizaam verliep besloot hij in 1917 het leger in te gaan, toen de VS troepen inzette in de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De oorlog werd echter al snel daarna beëindigd, en hij werd ontslagen zonder ooit naar Europa te zijn gegaan.
