Net als zijn grote vriend Joseph Roth zwierf Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) na de opkomst van de nationaalsocialisten jarenlang door Europa, gescheiden van zijn thuisland. Uiteindelijk vestigde hij zich in Brazilië, waar hij in 1942 samen met zijn vrouw zelfmoord pleegde.
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was een Ierse toneelschrijver en auteur. Hij werd bekend door zijn rol in de esthetische en decadente beweging, en werd gezien als een van de meest succesvolle toneelschrijvers van het Victoriaanse tijdperk. Het portret van Dorian Gray is zijn enige gepubliceerde roman.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) was schrijver en piloot. Hij schreef De kleine prins in 1943. Een jaar later werd hij, in dienst van de geallieerden, tijdens een verkenningsvlucht boven bezet gebied neergeschoten. Hij werd 44 jaar.
